Life On Mars
Life on Mars, the TV Program, enabled us to compare present day Police with Police in the 1970's.
In a Police drama, a lot of the narrative relys on binary opposites. The Police are seen as good and the suspect is represented as evil. The narrative of the drama follows a simple theory similar to the one put forward by Syd Field. The story starts off with a form of disruption, for example in the first episode its a murder. Then the agent of change occurs, when Sam Tyler is put into a coma and he returns to the 70's. Then an equilibrium brings the programme to a conclusion when
This reflects Syd Fields theory but his is the reverse to what Life On Mars uses.

The camera shots used in the present day show modern use of angles to add to the iconic view of a crime drama. Compared to the shots used when the 70's
An iconic view of modern day Police are well dressed in uniform and the detective was dressed in a smart suit and tie which shows they want to be seen as an authorative figure. The representation of the cars and offices used are very clean and organised whereas when we were taken back to the 70's, we were shown offices that were piled high with files and people slouched at their desks. The area was very run down and the police cars used were unmar
ked. From watching the program, I got the idea that the modern day detectives worked alongside with the Police. However back in the 70's, I got a sense that the detectives, especially Hunt, thought they were a class above the police, and that they could treat people however they pleased.
The representation used showed a big difference in the way the modern and dated Police conversed. Modern day Police showed courtesy towards the suspects like for example, when they were going to search the house, they gave the suspect a chance and asked if they could enter before breaking down the door. The dated police would show no courtesy towards the suspects, give them no chance to prove the allegations wrong and the Police would think they know best.
In each case for the modern day Police, every piece of evidence was seen as important and they would do all they can to get to the bottom of the case. In the 70's, the police were not that fussed about any evidence found, one of the officers even dropped food on part of the evidence then wiped it up with his sleeve.

Welcome to my blog!
I will use this blog to display all my media research and productions which will contribute to the Mest 3 Critical Investigation. The first topic we are going to focus on is representation in the media. We have begun to look at major groups such as the Police and how they are represented in different types of media texts.
